T1 At Home - Why, How Much And Other Aspects

Most home owners get the kind of Internet connection they require with the help of options such as:
  • DSL or digital subscriber lines
  • Cable Internet connectivity
  • T3
  • Dial-up and so on
Even though T1 connectivity is definitely an option, most homeowners tend to stay away from this simply because of the higher costs that are involved. But, surprisingly there is a lot of change in this scenario with quite a few homeowners talking about or considering going in for T1 at home as well.

Why would you need to do something like this?
Going in for T1 at home is decision that needs to be taken carefully. One of the biggest reasons why this care and attention should be paid is because it is significantly more expensive than most other connections. For instance, if you are contemplating going in for T1 bandwidth at 1.5 megabits per second, then there is quite a good chance that you will end up paying at least twenty times more than cable or DSL services. This significantly higher cost is because of many reasons such as:

  • T1 primarily being pitched for the business sector
  • The technology relying on a massive Internet backbone in order to be more reliable and robust than other technologies
  • T1 service providers being under the pressure of delivering uptime and available services with guaranty of bandwidth
But, this does not mean that homeowners should simply not contemplate getting a T1 at home. There are certain circumstances which completely justify a homeowner also investing in T1. Such circumstances or situations maybe:
  • An individual running a business from home – trading, web development, information services, home delivery options and so on
  • A Doctor or physician who also works from home and who may feel the need for T1 connectivity in order to be able to process medical images
Thus, if you are able to justify the higher costs of T1 in order to sustain your business, then it is definitely a proposition that will deliver great value for your money.

Cost comparison of T1 and other options
When it comes to going in for T1 at home, you also need to be able to understand the differences in costs and features when compared to other technologies. Broadly speaking, T1 can be compared with options such as T3, cable Internet, DSL. Depending on your location and the availability of various service providers when it comes to T1 at home, you may be looking at a cost of approximately $250 per month which can go up to even $750 per month.

  • A DSL line is also dependent on the same two factors of service providers and location and can range between $30 and $60 per month.
  • T3 offers a much faster speed of upload and download when compared to T1 and obviously costs more as well because the lower limit of such a connection is around $2000 and the upper limit can even touch the $9000 mark.
  • Cable Internet is faster than a DSL connection and costs anywhere between $40 and $80 per month.
