How to Get a Video to Rank on Page 1 of Google?

Nothing will ever replace content as the web’s number one source of information. Video has quickly taken the web by storm and has become an incredibly powerful marketing tool. If you’re interested in adding video to your SEO strategies, or you intend to use it as your primary means of marketing, you’re going to want to see that video ranking on the first page of Google search results. Here are a few tips on how to accomplish exactly that:

Treat it like a blog post. Blog posts require keyword-rich, catchy headlines in order to rank well with both search engines and web surfers. If you can get a quality keyword in your video’s title, you’re well on your way to soaring up the page rankings. Be warned, however, that your title does need to be relevant to the video or you’ll find yourself facing a lot of angry viewers.

Pay attention to little details. You also need to spend some time creating a well-written, keyword-rich video description. Whether it’s a lyric video to your favorite song or you’re trying to sell used lift trucks, be thorough in your description. Very few people realize the power and importance of a video’s description for search performance, so get in while the getting is still good.

Tell the world about it. Social signals are becoming a major factor in ranking. Make sure to spread the video on your social sites with interesting teasers to intrigue people enough to click the link to watch it. Ask friends and co-workers to spread it on their sites as well. You can even get popular Twitterers to tweet your link and short description through gigs on Fiverr.

Don’t publish junk. Just like with written content, videos need to be high quality in order to perform well. Your task is not over when you do achieve first page ranking; in fact, it’s only beginning. The bounce rate Google associates with your video URL will play a role in how long your video maintains its elite status. If people don’t like it, or it isn’t what they were led to believe it was, Google will take notice and demote you accordingly.

Get links. Your video should be a valuable resource that people will want to watch and link to. Write a few guest posts on topically relevant blogs and embed your video within the content. Depending on what keywords you want to rank for you might have to get more than a few. Use Open Site Explorer to see how many inbound links similar videos have so you know how high to aim.

Ultimately, if you can make a blog post or article rank well, then you can make a video do the same. Most of the best practices are similar; you’re just working with a different medium. Keep the quality of your videos high, optimize them for search engines, and then promote your links on your website and social media sites. Many times you won’t even know how much publicity you got until you do proper research on where your video ended up. You’ll be basking in the glory of your page 1 rank in no time!
