How Technology Can Help Keep Your Energy Costs Down

The summer months are in full swing, and this means that a lot of energy bills are skyrocketing upwards right now. Cooling your home can be a very energy intensive task in 100 degree and above weather, and this is why it is very important for you to find ways to lessen the load on your A/C unit and your wallet. Luckily, modern technology is here to help us. There are many energy technologies that you can take advantage of which will save you some money and lessen the carbon footprint of your home. Here are a few that you can use.

New Windows

Energy-efficient windows are a great way to cut your energy bill down in size. It is estimated that about a quarter of the energy you use in your home is for cooling purposes, so this can have a dramatic impact on your energy bill. According to Houston solar screens, these windows have tint that prevents the sun’s strongest rays from penetrating your home, and they also prevent cool air leakage to the outside.

Compact Fluorescent Lights

Flipping the light switch on consumes more than 10% of the energy we use, so it is natural to look for an energy-efficient alternative to traditional light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs cut energy usage by up to 75% when compared to regular light bulbs, so making the switch is almost a no-brainer. What turns many people off to these light bulbs is that they are more expensive up-front. This is true, but what offsets this cost is the fact that they have to be replaced much less frequently. Also, the light quality of a fluorescent light bulb is better than that of incandescent light bulbs.

Harness Wind Energy

It is now feasible to generate your own wind energy out of your back yard. Residential wind wills used to harness wind energy are becoming increasingly affordable, and while this is a hefty investment in the beginning, it will pay for itself very quickly. If you live in a high wind environment, you might even end up with a surplus of energy. This means the energy company pays you!

Harness Solar Energy

Photovoltaic cells are becoming extremely efficient as solar technology advances. While it used to be too expensive, prices have now come low enough that solar companies have begun to sell for residential use. Solar energy is great if you live in the arid west and in the southern part of the country. Solar panels are usually installed on your roof, and like wind energy, solar can provide you with an energy surplus that allows you to get paid by the energy company.
