The sound of that modem-connection noise has gone for many and is only a memory as more methods of connecting to the internet have been introduced. Despite the new technology and arguably more effective methods of connection to the World Wide Web, some users are still sticking with dial up and they represent quite a large number of internet users.
Many still have stayed loyal to the method in which has been branded as ‘old fashioned’ for various reasons. For a start, it is cheap. Dial-up connection can be a lot cheaper than other methods such as broadband and is ideal for those that don’t use the internet as much as others and only need it for limited amounts of time. It is of course great if you are on a small budget. Some people also use dial up connection purely because not only is it cheap but it is portable, you can use dial-up Internet anywhere there is a phone jack. Another key factor of dial up connection is the fact that it is very simple in terms of installation and setting up as no special hardware is needed, again also meaning low cost.
One of the main reasons that people have stuck by dial up and have not went for the upgrade of broadband or wireless connection is simply because the area in which you live/work in, you cannot obtain a good connection. Some areas do not fall under a good reception area when using iOS or other wireless connections, so consequently have to use dial up.
Despite the pros of the method, there are also of course many reasons that people have upgraded to a new, more advanced method of connectivity. Dial up can be very slow and is especially not recommended for those who are needing to stream video or audio data. Dial-up networks are very slow and normally have a maximum download and upload speed of 56 kbps (kilobits per second), which makes them highly unsuitable for online audio or video. Other people choose to update just because they always want the new method or technology.
Although dial up does have its downsides and is classed as old fashioned, many do still use dial up as in many ways it is still very reliable and of course, much cheaper than the rest.
