Exchange Server 550 Error with its Reasons & Recovery Methods

We Exchange Server users know how important EDB file is for us because it stores our whole information in it. These files are so sensitive and can be corrupted from any unexpected reason, at that time you need EDB file recovery.

I feel very irritated when I get bounced back emails form one particular domain server. This is all because of Exchange error code 550. The occurrence of this error is the most annoying situation for me because I usually handle it in different forms.

Following are the error message that comes on screen due to Exchange error 550:-

● There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <jomc.co.uk #5.5.0 smtp;550 must be authenticated>
● Error message: 550 4.4.7 queue.expired; message.expired
● SMTP 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay error
● SMTP error of " mailserverXXX.edu #550 5.7.1 Undeliverable message;
● Operation terminated with error -550 <JET_errDatabaseInconsistent, Database is in inconsistent state>

When I kept getting this error again and again in my Exchange Server in the different form of error messages, I was eager to know about the reasons behind this error code. Below are some causes that are mainly responsible for this error :-

● Connection problem between external domain & domain server
● Database is in an inconsistent state and cannot start
● Hardware and software errors
● Missing catalog files
● Virus breakdown
● Dirty shutdown of the system
● Incorrectly installed OS etc.

There is no need to worry as there are some default methods that can be used in case of Exchange error 550.

Method 1:-(Specially If the computer that runs Microsoft Exchange Server stops either responding or is not shut down gracefully after stopping all the services properly, the following error message may appear on screen and in the event logs)

● Check the state of the database.
● Use Eseutil.exe with the "MH" option on the problem database, and dump the output to a text file.
● Edit the Edbdump.txt file and confirm that the state of the database is inconsistent.
● If the database is inconsistent, run the EDBUTIL /R /DS.

Method 2:-(Specially when you get back emails form one particular domain server)

● Setup a telnet connection to the mail-server of that specific domain.
● Send a message via telnet to the mail server.
● Create a PTR record with the help of your ISP.
● Then check issue for only one domain or multiple domains and at last.
● And at last try to telnet on that email server and send EHLO command.

Method 3:-(Can be applied in all scenarios of Exchange error 550)

● Start Exchange system manager.
● Right click on the database that you want to dismount.
● Click task and then click dismount store.

Even if EDB file is not accessible to you then you need a software like Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Exchange Server Recovery that can repair corrupted .edb file and retrieve all information from it. This tool is applicable for all version of Microsoft Exchange Server like 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 and 5.5.
