The Pros and Cons of Digital Printing

The printing industry has changed significantly since digital was introduced. Traditional offset press tends to be deteriorating with the growth of digital printing. The difference between the two is not all that great, so what are the pros and cons of digital printing?

The Cons
Digital printing costs more per piece. This is one benefit to the old traditional offset presses as they are designed to run large amounts of products at one time, giving you a smaller price tag. Digital printing is more expensive in this sense.

There are also fewer mediums that can be used with digital. Although the amount of mediums are growing as the years go on, it is still not comparable to the traditional printing where you can print on anything from wood to cloth. You are not provided with as many colors as they use a four color printing process. The colors that you choose might not print exactly the same color that appears on the screen, either.

The Pros
If you are printing a lower quantity project it is going to be a better deal for you. Shorter runs can be done very quickly, so if the job is of a timely manner it can be done quicker than if you were to go with traditional offset printing.

Digital printing has a great amount of flexibility if you want changes to the printed material. You are provided the option to make every piece personalized. You can add names, numbers, personalize paragraphs to each individual print.

You are going to be wasting less than if you were to use traditional offset printing. You can print your pieces to order, which means you might pay more per piece but you can order the exact you need instead of needing to throw outdated material away because you were unable to use it.

Digital printing also allows you to proof the work. If you have work that is extremely detailed you are going to want to spend hours making sure everything is exactly correct. You can hold a sample in your hand and proof it before the whole print run is created, and if any work needs to be done you can make corrections to ensure everything is right.

The pros and cons of digital printing tend to sway more towards positive than negative, as many people can see. If you want professional, quick and non-waste printing done, digital printing is the simple solution. For those longer runs, consider traditional printing to save money.
