Product design is the process of creating tangible products from conceptual ideas. Today, designers have the challenge of not only coming up with new ideas but also improving existing products to ensure that they are fresh, practical and exciting. Whilst we constantly see innovations in terms of product design, there have been a number of particularly eye-catching and ground-breaking designs in recent months. These have been across all fields, with some of the best designs within the interior design and household architecture industries and the technology industry.

Dyson’s bladeless fan:

Best and Most Innovative Designs
The Dyson Air Multiplyer is a piece of product design that is definitive of what a successful product should encompass. It is sleek, practical and makes significant improvements on a product that already exists. The Air Multiplyer (which can be assumed is a posh word for fan) is a resdesign of the bladeless fan Dyson released in 2009. It is a cooling device that the designers at Dyson say can blow over 450 litres of cold air per second. But how does it actually work? It looks like a hollow tube mounted on a pedestal and there are no visible blades to generate cold air. When the device is switched off, it is difficult to believe that air is pushed through the tube when turned on. However, with a combination of science and technology, a steady stream of air is expelled from the tube when plugged in. This is not only a ‘fun’ gadget; it is also extremely practical in terms of safety, particularly parents who are concerned about their young children.

Digital bath taps:

Grohe, a company dedicated to designing and manufacturing luxury bathroom fittings, have brought out a range of digital taps. Under the name Ondus Digitecture, these taps are innovation in creating a new way of running a bath. These award winning taps allow you to control the temperature and pressure of your bath or shower at the touch of a button. You are able to personalise your perfect bath as the taps ‘remember’ what your preferred temperatures and pressures are. With this state of the art technology, digital can become a priority in your bathroom and create an optimum bathing experience.

Apple’s iPad:

Perhaps now known as a classic in terms of product design, there is no doubt that the Apple iPad continues to be one of the best examples of innovative and sleek design on the market. The tablet industry has exploded in the last year; however iPads remain at the top of the market. In many ways, this is because of their sleek aesthetics, usability and continued relevance to users across all industries. In fact, they are becoming increasingly used in retail design, in restaurants and in commerce in general. Furthermore, they continue to be popular with leisure users and there are a number of experts that believe we may come to a time when tablets replace laptops as the portable computing device of choice. With Apple’s standard release of a new model every few years, it will be interesting to see how the iPad is redesigned and improved in the future.
